FPO Event Rankings For European Open 2024

Post event update: Based on final results of European Open, not too many surprises, but Kristin Tattar had to come roaring back from an off day during 3rd round to take down her first Major of 2024. Silva Saarinen in 2nd is a tad surprising given the caliber of players in this Major, though she’s emerging as top 3 European player for FPO in 2024, and this latest event makes it more clear.

Our projections were great, wonderful, nothing to be down about, other than predicting for a list of 15 players is much easier than predicting for typical FPO event where 30 players are in our list. Here are the numbers for our accuracy with predictions at the European Open tournament:

• 26% (4 of 15) were spot on, with 0 being exact matches
• 60% (9 of 15) were semi close or better (yellow and green combined)
• 40% (6 of 15) were somewhat off (orange)
• 0% (0 of 15) were well off or worse (0 red and 0 gray combined)

Our goal of achieving 20% spot on predictions, or better, was hit rather easily and this is the best we’ve done in 2024, but again, with a limited set of predictions. Our latest goal of 60% or better for FPO predictions to be semi close or better was also hit this time. And having none that are well off or worse is great, though not too many in the field had chance of this happening. We did adjust our scale on accuracy for this event, making it tighter than our usual. All of this is likely unique to this tournament, and with Ledgestone being next up for Event Rankings, it’s back to typical scale and list of predictions coming up.

Event rankings are the new kid on the block for listing pro players in an orderly way for upcoming events of the pro disc golf season. Our hope is these rankings inform fantasy disc golf participants as well as entertain fans of pro disc golf for this particular event.

Note for European Open Field

Typically we publish a list of 20 to 30 for FPO Event Rankings. For European Open, the max list is 15, given limited field size that invites players to the Major, rather than the norm of open registration.

A Winning Formula

…is what we someday hope to write about our Event Rankings, and show off just how good AF is at predicting results for pro disc golf tournaments. It continues to show up as challenging, quite humbling, and addictive fun. Predictive analysis is certainly important, though we are learning it takes courage no formula can reasonably obtain.

With that said, our modest goal is to achieve 20% accuracy in our predictions for the top 20 in FPO, as well as 60% on our ‘semi-close’ predictions. We count 1 place off in FPO as correct (enough), 2 to 6 spots off is semi-close, and ideally we are getting exact matches. Most weeks we don’t quite hit the goal, but so far in 2024, we have hit the target for correct picks five times, getting 20% accuracy for Jonesboro and Champions Cup, 21% for DMC, 23% for Texas State, and 24% for DDO predictions.

Keeping It Simple

The event predictions are truly meant to be viewed as simple list, depicting projected order they’ll finish from 1 through 15, along with their AF latest ranking (updated earlier this week), then player name, rating, and actual place they end up at 2024 EurO.

Colors are adding in layers of added information, that convey how well AF assesses they are doing so far this season, as well as historical performance at EurO tournaments in the past 5 years. Please use this link for details on our color scheme, pertaining to this list.

Ranked Players and the Unranked

Of the 10 or so FPO in the field that are playing, but not part of our list, there are 2 types of players in that mix. Some are players who we are tracking, but are not quite fantasy relevant. They could be by the next event, and we will continue to monitor them. The 2nd type are lower rated players who may surprise many and do well at the event, though typically over 4 rounds of Major level play, they tend to settle near the bottom of the standings. Our hope is to rank them someday based on them rising up. With that said:
