Long considered the Epicenter of Disc Golf.
The large, multi-use wilderness park includes a ball golf course
which hosts a temporary 18 hole disc golf course
for the Masters Cup
During the 3 day tournament, 54 total holes are in play
For both FPO and MPO
Targets are Innova Discatcher Pro 28’s, with concrete tees.
As the Masters Cup is one of the longest running tournaments,
in it’s 36th year, the 2 updates to this year are quite notable.
- What was a 24 hole DeLa tournament course for a long time, is now an 18 hole course for 2 of the 3 days in the tournament.
- Also, the 2-meter rule is NOT in effect for 2022 Masters Cup
FPO par 54 on the 6,228 foot original Dela Disc Golf Course
MPO par 54 on the 6,276 foot OG Dela DGC
FPO par 60 on the 7,495 foot DeLaveaga Golf Course
MPO par 60 on the 8,631 foot Golf Course
Hole lengths FPO & MPO for DeLa DGC:
- 18 par 3’s = 215 to 550 feet
- Hole 15 (which is hole 25 on full 29 hole layout)
has A & B position for baskets
FPO plays to A, MPO plays to B position - That hole is the only difference between MPO and FPO layouts
- Hole 15 (which is hole 25 on full 29 hole layout)
> No course records to report as the 18 hole layout is new to 2022
Hole lengths for Golf Course layout (Sunday):
FPO
- 12 par 3’s = 238 to 429 feet
- 6 par 4’s = 530 to 606 feet
MPO
- 12 par 3’s = 238 to 515 feet
- 6 par 4’s = 567 to 800 feet

About the Team
that makes Masters Cup happen
The course herself is long celebrated and prominent within the worldwide disc golf community. Starting with the vision and design from hall of famer, Tom Schot, the course has offered up nuanced challenges, and length. In the mid 1980’s, when discs were different, courses emphasized technical shots over length, and DeLa added distance to help define championship level course. She also offers significant elevation changes with the signature final hole, “Top of the World” being most iconic, in history of the sport.
As awesome as DeLa sounds and is to play, apparently she has a darker side. Or when Art asked TD Matt to describe the course, he said:
DeLa is mean and she will punish you should you throw an errant shot, and she can also be very forgiving with some tree kicks, skips, or even the occasional roll from a root.
When looking through the DeLa caddy book, you’ll see the phrase “steep drop off” on either side of fairway, which is the punishing part. And so, well cared for and graciously prepared fairways are important. Which is where the DeLaveaga Disc Golf Club comes in. Working passionately to prepare the course well in advanced for the 2 weekend Masters Cup. Regional Pros and Ams already played A tier tournament the weekend before the DGPT Silver Series event. All due to the devoted efforts of the Club. As TD Matt puts it:
They are the life blood of the tournament as they are the ones that are doing course work for months and months leading up to the tournament to make sure DeLa looks her best. We always say that “she’s getting her hair and nails done” in preparation for the tournament.
A (Brief) History Of The Event
Masters Cup history is so rich and filled with tradition, it is tough to capture in a simple profile. One day Art hopes to do just that. 36 years is a long time for a tournament to be established and still running strong. For as long as there’s been a PDGA National Tour, there’s been an annual Masters Cup. And before that, it was included in the “Summer Super Tour.”
While it is Silver Series in 2022, for the elite pros, its status as a prominent stop on tour precedes its designation on the schedule. Often the first big event on the west coast swing of the Pro Tour. And it continues to have a great following, or as TD Matt shares:
Regardless of the tier, we know what we offer to the Disc Golf Community and we know that the product that we put out year in and year out is at the top of the list. So many players flock to Santa Cruz for the event from all over the state of California, as well as around the country for the Amateur event. The same thing can be said for the Pro weekend. We have touring Pros that travel from every corner of the US to play DeLa.
What To Do
While In Santa Cruz
While soaking in the mid May vibes of sun shiny California, there’s plenty to take in while visiting the Santa Cruz area. And fortunately, the tournament’s website has all the bases covered on it’s Local page. Food, accommodations, and fun activities, are all found on the page. Still, Art asked for specific suggestions from TD Matt, and here’s what he conveyed:
If you like Mexican/taqueria’s then Tacos Moreno’s is the place to go. Its just down the street from the course and its a favorite to many if not all the locals. If you want seafood, then going out to the Wharf near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the place to go, specifically Riva’s. There’s also tons of great breweries in Santa Cruz like Santé Adairius, Humble Sea, and Discretion Brewing. The attractions include Henry Cowell State Park, Roaring Camp Railroad, all of the wonderful beaches, the Boardwalk, the Mystery Spot, and the list goes on.
